Winter fishing is back!
River of plenty…
Big Bend Lodge is testing the waters and offering river access and accommodations for the 2012 winter fishing season! In the spirit of Ace Anthony we are opening up the lodge for fisherman looking to catch steelhead trout on the South Fork of the Eel River during the peak run of steelhead in January and February. (The Eel River was named “Weott Lolla” or the “river of plenty” by the natives who lived along its shores.)
The lodge is a small resort originally built in the 1940’s to accommodate guests during the summer months and fishermen during the winter season. Our cabins are spare and practical with fully equipped kitchens.
Cabins available January 3, 2012 through February 27, 2012 (Please go to our Reservations page for booking details).
Please be respectful!
Catch and release is always the rule on the Eel River. All wild steelhead caught must be released unharmed. Wild steelhead are identified by having an intact adipose fin (the small, top fin near the tail). Hatchery steelhead may be kept in selected waters. Hatchery steelhead are identified by a missing adipose fin and a healed scar in the location of the missing fin. Fishermen need to wait after any significant rain for the Eel to clear up enough to fish again.
Fishing on all rivers and streams in the Mendocino National Forest is regulated by the California Department of Fish and Game. A current valid California fishing license is required for all anglers over 16 years of age. Contact the Department of Fish and Game for fishing seasons, limits and bag limits.
